Art's Description:

This piece serves as a tribute to the enduring spirit of Puerto Rican resistance. We have multiple flag variations throughout history.  The Lares flag stands as a testament to the resistance against Spanish colonial rule, followed by the iconic blue sky version that symbolizes revolutionary movements and opposition to assimilation (deemed unlawful for a decade). The government-approved dark blue variant aligns with the 'Commonwealth’ and the U.S., while the black and white flag emerged in response to financial control under the PROMESA act, symbolizing resistance to neoliberal policies and reflecting the ongoing struggles in present-day Borikén, Puerto Rico.

Crafted through hand sewing, I used various shades of blue tarps reminiscent of post-Hurricane María life in Borikén, Puerto Rico, where many homes still lack roofs. These tarps become a symbol of celebration for Puerto Rican resistance, natural disasters, censorship, and other adversities. In a nod to history, I pay homage to Mariana Bracetti, the first person to hand-sew a Puerto Rican flag in the 1860s, recognizing the often overlooked contributions of women leaders in liberation movements. As a woman myself, I acknowledge the unique challenges faced by women leaders who navigate revolutions within revolutions, and this tribute seeks to honor their vital role as well.
